After months of work, two murals at the Town of Carrboro’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park have been completed.

The town shared a release on Friday saying the artwork has been installed, with both pieces being directly inspired by and featuring Dr. King’s quotes and image.

The artwork was designed by three local high school students, who’s designs were selected from a pool of submitted applicantsKathy Bolanos-Villanueva, Hannah Ingham and Lily Reeves worked with local muralist Michael Brown and his protégé Livian Kennedy to combine their ideas and create two murals.

The murals are featured on the eastern and western sides of the main building of the park, which located at 1120 Hillsborough Rd. in Carrboro. The artwork is one of the final additions to the park, which officially opened on January 21 earlier this year to honor Dr. King. Quotes on plaques will be placed around the walking trail following the conclusion of a selection process by the town.

One of the two murals contains an interactive component: a QR Code. Those visiting the park can scan it and answer the question depicted in the mural,“What are you doing for others?” According to the town’s release, some submissions may be chosen for display on the town’s website and social media platforms.
