The sixth-ranked UNC men’s tennis team kicked off its ACC schedule with a win on Friday, knocking off the Virginia Tech Hokies by a score of 6-1.

Playing on the indoor courts at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill due to strong windy conditions, the Tar Heels (10-2, 1-0 ACC) took the first six points of the match as they cruised to the easy victory.

After taking the doubles point, UNC won the first five singles matches all in straight sets–highlighted by a 6-4, 6-2 victory by No. 1 William Blumberg over No. 29 Mitch Harper.

Virginia Tech (9-2) then finally got on the board with a three-set victory by Alexandre Ribiero over UNC’s Simon Soendergaard.

By that point, however, the outcome of the match was no longer in doubt.

It was exactly the kind of start to the ACC gauntlet that Tar Heel head coach Sam Paul was looking for from his team.

“All our ACC matches are tough,” Paul said afterwards. “Virginia Tech’s got a very good program, so this is a good win for us.”
