The Golden State Warriors set the record for the most regular season wins in a season in the history of the NBA Wednesday night.  The 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls previously held that record.

Former North Carolina Tar Heel Harrison Barnes is a starter on this record-setting Warriors team.  Of course, the Bulls were led by another Tar Heel, Michael Jordan.

The University of North Carolina is the only school with starters on both of these record setting teams.

The Warriors’ win Wednesday night was their 73rd of the season.  They finished the regular season with a record of 73-9.  The Bulls finished the 1995-1996 season with a record of 72-10.  Two teams are now tied for the third best record, Jordan’s Bulls from the 1996-1997 season and the 1971-1972 Los Angeles Lakers.  The 1966-1967 Philadelphia 76ers are fifth on this list.  That squad also included a Tar Heel, Billy Cunningham.

The Bulls, Lakers, and 76ers all went on to win the NBA Championship after their strong regular seasons.

The Golden State Warriors will begin their quest for their second straight NBA Championship with a series against the Houston Rockets.  Game 1 is Saturday at 3:30.

While Jordan was the only Tar Heel on that legendary Bulls team, the current Warriors squad features two Tar Heels.  In addition to Harrison Barnes, James Michael McAdoo is also on the roster.

UNC also leads all schools with 13 players in the playoffs.
