This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Meg McGurk from the Town of Chapel Hill.
McGurk has served as the town’s community safety planner since 2018 and has been essential in Chapel Hill’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, she’s served as planning section chief and manager of emergency operations.
“Meg has done an outstanding job and has helped out so much in response to this pandemic for the town,” said Ran Northam, Chapel Hill’s communications manager.
Northam also touched on McGurk’s role as the planning section chief, which was instrumental in the town’s response to COVID-19.
“The planning section chief is kind of like that right hand of the emergency manager of the emergency that we’re responding to,” said Northam. “The planning section chief puts together all the schedules, sets up all the meetings, collects a lot of those FEMA forms that we have to do to make sure that the town gets FEMA reimbursement.
“So, especially in the beginning of the pandemic, that was a big role, an important role. And one that took a lot to accomplish and Meg was an outstanding fit.”
Northam said McGurk has been upbeat and enthusiastic about her role with Chapel Hill amid the pandemic.
“She’s always the yes person. Yes, we can do it. And here’s how and how can I help? It’s great.”
