Winter Storm Diego rolled through the Triangle this weekend, bringing with it eight to 12 inches of snow.

But even though the storm has passed, there are still hazards on the road. Most notably the black ice that freezes on the roads overnight when temperatures dip below freezing.

“Even with mostly clear skies, it’s not going to have too much in the way of melting going on.” said meteorologist James Morrow on the Aaron Keck Show. “And anything that does melt will unfortunately freeze again Tuesday night and Wednesday.”

Morrow said that Thursday is the earliest that the ice might finally disappear for good.

“We’ll slowly be climbing, so we’ll have mid forties on Thursday and then finally getting into the fifties on Friday right ahead of the next storm system that looks to bring quite a bit of rainfall to our area.”

One of the most important pieces of advice Morrow passed along was that drivers should treat wet patches on the road as ice, especially in the morning hours.

“Do not brake too hard, do not make wild turns as that is often when you lose control of your car. So treat any wet spot in the roadway as if it was ice.”
