This weekend’s winter storm brought ice and snow to Orange County, which has continued to persist into the work week.
Although the snow has begun to melt, water and ice on the roads have combined for dangerous conditions during Tuesday’s commute. Black ice is a thin coating of ice on roads that is often not visible to the naked eye and may have formed overnight due to low temperatures.
Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue tweeted out a picture of a car overturned on Highway 54 near Jones Ferry Road this morning, saying, “Thankful nobody hurt but this could have been deadly for the driver and 1st responders. Stay home until it melts, friends…”

The National Weather Service in Raleigh has extended its advisory for black ice until 11 a.m. this morning. If you need to hit the road, drivers are urged to use caution and take it slow.
Authorities also responded to a downed electrical wire on Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro. Police blocked off the area and raised the wire to make it accessible to drivers. Residents are still advised to use caution around this area.

Chapel Hill Transit has delayed operating until 10 a.m. this morning and will run with a modified schedule.
