A pair of goals from Martin Vician proved to be the difference for the UNC men’s soccer team on Sunday night in Chapel Hill, as the Tar Heels eased past Memphis 2-0 to advance to the NCAA Tournament round of 16.

Vician’s first goal came in just the eighth minute, as he connected with a picture-perfect cross to put the Tar Heels ahead 1-0.

Though Carolina and Memphis were an even 5-5 on shots in the first half, the Tigers were never able to send a shot at goalkeeper Andrew Cordes. That trend would continue in the second half, as Memphis continued to create chances but never challenged Cordes’ net. The Tigers ended the night with zero shots on goal.

Vician all but put the match to bed in the 49th minute, once again getting his head to a cross in the box and sending it into the back of the net. Vician’s nine goals on the season are second on the team and just one behind Quenzi Huerman.

The win improves No. 3 Carolina to 11-3-6 on the season and 7-1-3 at Dorrance Field. The Tar Heels will look to build on that home record in the next round of the tournament, as the team will host No. 14 overall seed Hofstra in the round of 16 on Sunday at 5 p.m.
