The UNC men’s soccer team’s NCAA Tournament run came to an end Saturday evening at Dorrance Field, as the No. 3 Tar Heels fell to Oregon State 1-0 in the national quarterfinals. Carolina’s season is over. With the win, the Beavers advance to their first College Cup in program history.

A 36th-minute goal for Oregon State served as the difference, and the Beavers would hold Carolina to just one shot on goal for the remainder of the match. Meanwhile, UNC goalkeeper Andrew Cordes had to make four saves to keep the deficit at just 1-0. UNC’s best chance at an equalizer came in the 55th minute, as Ahmad Al-Qaq forced the only save of the night for Beaver keeper Luis Castillo

Things got even tougher for Carolina late in the match, as leading goalscorer Quenzi Huerman was issued a red card in the 86th minute. Despite being down to 10, UNC still had another golden opportunity from Al-Qaq, but his shot in the 88th minute flew above and beyond the Oregon State goal. The Tar Heels wouldn’t fire another shot.

The loss denies Carolina a 10th trip to the College Cup and a second in the last four seasons.
