Following its run to the ACC Tournament final last week, the UNC men’s soccer team earned the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament on Monday. The Tar Heels will have a first-round bye before opening play at Dorrance Field on Sunday.

Carolina enters the field at 10-3-6, though the team finished the season strong with only one regulation loss in its final seven matches. UNC is one of six ACC teams to earn a national seed: No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 7 Virginia, No. 9 Clemson, No. 10 Wake Forest and No. 15 Duke are also featured. Future ACC members SMU (No. 6) and Stanford (No. 16) are seeded as well.

The Tar Heels will host the winner of a play-in match between Memphis and SIU-Edwardsville. That match will be played on Thursday. UNC’s opening match on Sunday does not yet have a kickoff time.

UNC is aiming to win the program’s third national championship in men’s soccer. The team has reached the College Cup three times since its most recent title in 2011, last advancing to the national semifinals in 2021. This year’s College Cup will be played in Louisville in December.
