The UNC men’s soccer team saw its season come to an end Thursday afternoon at Dorrance Field, falling to High Point 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. A pair of second-half goals were enough to see the Panthers through to the second round.

Though Carolina outshot High Point 11-5, the Tar Heels only sent two of those shots on goal and had no shots on goal in the second half. By contrast, all three of the Panthers’ shots on goal came in the second half. Combined with UNC’s two matches in the ACC Tournament, the Tar Heels scored just one goal in their final 270 minutes of action.

Both of High Point’s goals came in a span of 4:15 early in the second half, and Carolina was never able to recover.

The loss marks only the second time all season the Tar Heels have dropped consecutive matches. It’s their first home loss in NCAA Tournament play since 2018, which was also the last time the team lost in the first round of the competition.

The match is one of three to be played on the Dorrance Field pitch on Thursday, as a pair of NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament matches will be played later in the afternoon: Stanford faces BYU at 3 p.m., and UNC will host Georgia at 6 p.m.
