William V. “Bill” Bell has been an active public servant of Durham, NC, for 51 years. Elected to the Durham County Board of Commissioners in 1972, served for 26 years, chairing the board for 12 years. Bell was also the longest serving mayor of Durham; served 8 terms (2001-2017), choosing not to run for re-election in 2017. Bell’s civilian work history reflects an extensive degree of education and experience as an engineer, having worked at The Martin–Marietta Corporation; The US Army Research and Development Lab; The IBM Corporation retiring in 1996, and currently is the Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer at the UDI Community Development in Durham NC. Bell also served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army Signal Corps. Bell is a graduate of Howard University, Washington, D.C. BS in Electrical Engineering and New York University, New York, NY, MS in Electrical Engineering. Bell has been awarded many local, state, and national honors, including but not limited to: The NCCU Board of Trustees; Chairperson of the North Carolina Railroad Company’s (NCRR) Board of Directors; Awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Duke University; Awarded North Carolina State University School of Design 23rd Designlife Award.
