The No. 2 UNC women’s lacrosse team dispatched yet another ranked opponent Sunday afternoon, throttling No. 6 Northwestern 20-9 at Dorrance Field to move to 6-0 in the 2022 season.
The Wildcats held a 3-2 lead after the first quarter on the strength of three unassisted goals, but that lead quickly evaporated in the second. UNC opened the quarter on a 6-0 run, kickstarted by Jamie Ortega’s first goal of the game and helped along by two scores each from Olivia Dirks and Sam Geiersbach. Northwestern scored a late goal before the half, but a 3-2 lead had turned into an 8-4 deficit.
A 7-2 Carolina run in the second half, capped off by two more goals from Geiersbach, put the game out of reach. UNC scored nine goals in the fourth quarter to turn what had been a competitive afternoon into a blowout. Geiersbach finished with a season-high five goals and added an assist to give her a team-high six points. Dirks and Ally Mastroianni each recorded hat tricks, with Mastroianni tallying four goals and an assist to tie her with Ortega with five points. Ortega scored two goals and dished out three assists.
Northwestern is already the fourth ranked opponent Carolina has defeated in six games this season, following wins over James Madison, Florida and Jacksonville. The Tar Heels will host unranked Mercer Friday at Dorrance Field at 5 p.m. Louisville will visit Chapel Hill the following Sunday for the Tar Heels’ second ACC game of the season.
