Tewaaraton Award finalist Chloe Humphrey racked up 11 total points to lead UNC past Clemson 17-6 in the NCAA Tournament’s second round Sunday at Dorrance Field.
Humphrey’s dominance helped the Tar Heels unleash a massive run of 16 unanswered goals across the first, second and third quarters. The Tigers had scored the game’s opening goal at the 12:35 mark of the opening period, but would not score again for more than 40 minutes of game time. By the time they did, UNC led 16-1.
Humphrey tied the game with her first of seven goals, then gave UNC the lead less than five minutes later. She would secure a hat trick before the first quarter ended, as her third goal of the afternoon gave Carolina a 4-1 advantage. At one point in the second quarter, Humphrey scored or assisted on seven consecutive Tar Heel goals. All four of Humphrey’s assists came in a span of less than four minutes.
UNC led 16-2 at the end of the first quarter before taking its foot off the gas. Through the opening 45 minutes, UNC led 21-14 in total shots, 17-9 in shots on target, 13-4 in draw controls and had made seven saves to Clemson’s one.
The Tar Heels, who are the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament field, are now through to the national quarterfinals next Thursday. UNC will face either Stanford or No. 7 overall seed Michigan, who are also in action Sunday. Regardless of the result of that game, Thursday’s quarterfinal will be played at Dorrance Field. UNC is seeking to win back-to-back national titles for the first time in program history.
