The No. 2 UNC women’s lacrosse team got a rain-soaked victory over the visiting Jacksonville Dolphins Sunday at Dorrance Field and moved to 5-0 on the young season.

Graduate midfielder Andie Aldave led the way with five goals on the day, which is the highest single-game mark for Carolina this season. Aldave transferred to UNC this past offseason from Notre Dame.

Aldave’s first goal put the capper on a strong first quarter for the Tar Heels, which included five goals from four different players. Ally Mastroianni, Sam Geiersbach, Scottie Rose Growney and Aldave all scored within the first 10 minutes. It was the usual suspects once again in the second, as Mastroianni, Growney, Aldave and Jamie Ortega each found the back of the net.

UNC held an 11-4 advantage at halftime, then scored four straight goals to open the third quarter and blow the game open. Aldave scored the final two of those four goals, then added one more for good measure in the fourth quarter to complete her five-goal day. She tied with Geiersbach for the team lead with five points against the Dolphins, and the duo were two of four Tar Heels to score hat tricks. Mastroianni and Growney were the others. Thanks to Growney’s hat trick and a relatively quiet day from Ortega (one goal and two assists), Growney now holds the team lead with 14 goals this season.

“Overall, our midfield, defense and offense did a great job,” said head coach Jenny Levy. “I think there are still things we can get better at and sharpen up, but I think it was a really good team win.”

Now winners of 32 of their last 33 games, the Tar Heels are in the midst of a four-game homestand in Chapel Hill. No. 6 Northwestern will visit Dorrance Field for the second of those four games Sunday at noon.
