The UNC volleyball team picked up their 13th win of the season Sunday afternoon in Carmichael Arena, and it was their most lopsided yet. The Tar Heels swept the Virginia Tech Hokies three sets to none, with two of those sets decided by huge 25-8 margins.

Nia Parker-Robinson led all players from either team with 15 kills. No other Hokie or Tar Heel had more than eight.

Carolina and Virginia Tech split the first eight points of the first set, but the Tar Heels then ripped off a massive 15-1 run to bury the Hokies in an insurmountable deficit. UNC took advantage of multiple Virginia Tech errors during the run, and the set itself was sealed by two Hokie errors.

The second set was the most competitive of the match, with the Hokies and Tar Heels both holding leads well into the frame. Virginia Tech used runs of 6-0 and 5-0 to take a 20-16 lead, and sat just five points from evening up the match. But four clutch kills from Parker-Robinson down the stretch keyed a Carolina rally. UNC earned three set points up 24-21, but dropped two straight and nearly let the Hokies off the hook. On UNC’s third and final chance, Skyy Howard did the deed for head coach Joe Sagula’s team, slamming down a kill to clinch the set for the Tar Heels, 25-23.

The third set was nearly a mirror image of the first, with Carolina runs of 7-0 and 8-0 keeping Virginia Tech from ever gaining any momentum. It was Howard who again dealt the final blow, sending in another kill on match point to clinch UNC’s second straight ACC win. It was UNC’s first sweep victory since September 18 against Davidson.

The Tar Heels are now 13-4 overall and 2-4 in ACC play after dropping four straight matches to open up their conference schedule. They’ll take a trip up north next weekend when they visit Boston College on Friday, October 15 and Syracuse the following Sunday.
