Head coach Brian Kalbas couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the NCAA Tournament for his Tar Heel women’s tennis team, which defeated Mississippi State 4-0 on Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill to reach the program’s ninth consecutive Round of 16.

It was the also the second straight sweep to begin the tournament for UNC, which knocked off Morgan State by the same score on Friday.

The pairing of Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham (6-2) joined with the duo of Marika Akkerman and Makenna Jones (6-3) to deliver the Tar Heels the doubles point early on in the match.

In singles play, Alle Sanford (6-1, 6-2), Makenna Jones (6-2, 6-0) and Alexa Graham (6-3, 7-5) took care of business in quick fashion to earn UNC a trip to Winston-Salem for the next portion of the tournament.
