A top-five showdown on Saturday afternoon at Dorrance Field ended with the top-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team delivering an impressive statement–defeating the No. 3 Maryland Terrapins by a score of 19-6.

Junior midfielder Scottie Rose Growney tallied a career-high six goals for the Tar Heels (4-0), while Jamie Ortega and Katie Hoeg each added four goals apiece in easily the team’s most impressive showing to date. Tayler Warehime also added a pair of goals to the cause.

The 19 goals scored by UNC were the most it has ever recorded in 41 all-time games against Maryland (1-2), while the 13-goal margin of victory was also the largest in the history of the rivalry–which has seen both programs win national titles in recent years.

It was in the second half where the Tar Heels really took control, outscoring the Terrapins 12-2 over the final 30 minutes of the game. UNC also finished with 39 shots compared to only 19 for Maryland.

“I thought once we started going a little harder in the second half, it broke open offensively for us,” head coach Jenny Levy said afterwards. “But credit our defense; they’re really good and they played great today. Maryland goes hard at you and puts a lot of pressure on you, and I thought we did a good job there.”
