The first round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Tournament played itself out on Wednesday in Winston-Salem, with UNC’s William Blumberg–the No. 2 overall seed–advancing past San Diego’s August Holmgren with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Blumberg is looking to build on his spectacular performance in this event last year, when he advanced all the way to the finals as a freshman.

With the first round victory on Wednesday, he advances to face Tennessee Tech’s Edu Mena on Thursday morning–another player coming off a victory in straight sets.

The Connecticut native also represents the last remaining Tar Heel in the tournament, as ACC Freshman of the Year Benjamin Sigouin suffered a loss in straight sets to South Carolina’s Paul Jubb.
