The 24th-ranked UNC wrestling team pulled off an enormous victory on Friday in Deerfield Beach, Florida–defeating the No. 8 Minnesota Golden Gophers 25-16 as part of the South Beach Duals.

In the 141-pound match, A.C. Headlee pinned Minnesota’s Thomas Thorn–the 10th ranked wrestler in the nation at that weight class–to put UNC ahead 9-6 through three matches.

Troy Heilmann earned an 18-6 major decision at 149 pounds to extend the Tar Heel lead even further, but Minnesota would rally with wins in the next three contests–tying the team score up with only two matches remaining.

Danny Chaid matched Headlee’s early pin with one of his own at 197 pounds, however, which gave UNC a comfortable six-point lead entering the final match of the dual.

A 3-2 decision win by Cory Daniel at heavyweight closed out the victory for the Tar Heels, earning the first ever win over a top-10 program for head coach Coleman Scott.

Dual Notes:

  • The Tar Heels lost 27-9 to No. 4 Missouri in their second dual of the day.
  • Minnesota is the alma mater of current WWE Universal Champion–and former UFC Heavyweight Champion–Brock Lesnar.
