Opening round play in the ITA National Indoor Championships began Friday for the fifth-ranked UNC women’s tennis team, as the Tar Heels advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-2 victory over Ole Miss.

Marika Akkerman and Makenna Jones helped clinch the doubles point for UNC (7-0) after the teams split the first two doubles sets–getting head coach Brian Kalbas’ squad off to a great start.

From there, the Tar Heels dropped two of the first three singles contests before Alexa Graham (6-2, 6-2) and Sara Daavettila (6-2, 3-6, 6-1)  earned victories in their matches to clinch the overall win for the team.

As a result, UNC advanced to face another undefeated team–No. 8 Texas Tech–in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
