Sophomore forward Janelle Bailey had 18 points and nine rebounds on Wednesday afternoon to lead the UNC women’s basketball team to a 59-47 victory at Carmichael Arena over the visiting VCU Rams.

The Tar Heels shot just just 34 percent from the floor in the game, but held VCU (2-1) to a 32 percent mark with a strong defensive performance.

Leading 25-22 at halftime, UNC came out of the locker room and kept VCU from scoring for a stretch that lasted over 10 minutes bridging the third and fourth quarters.

A 20-0 run helped the Tar Heels open up a 21-point lead early in the fourth quarter, as they cruised the rest of the way to the victory.

In addition to Bailey’s dominant performance in the frontcourt, the Tar Heels received 15 and 10 points, respectively, from guards Paris Kea and Shayla Bennett.
