Head coach Sylvia Hatchell and the UNC women’s basketball team started its season on the right note Tuesday night, as it rolled to a 100-69 victory on the road over the Elon Phoenix.

Junior guard Shayla Bennett–a transfer from Gulf State College–led the Tar Heels with 19 points and seven assists, while a total of six different players scored in double figures.

In addition to Bennett’s efforts, Preseason All-ACC guard Paris Kea chipped in 17 points while Stephanie Watts added 16 points and nine rebounds in her first regular season game since the 2016-17 season.

The Tar Heels led by just one point after the first quarter, but went on to build an 11-point advantage by halftime.

From there, UNC continued to pull away without much of a challenge–outscoring Elon by ten points in both the third and fourth quarters to create the final margin of victory.

Outside shooting was the critical difference between the two teams, as the Tar Heels converted on 11 of their 24 attempts from three-point range compared to Elon’s 1-for-12 mark in the same category.

With the win, UNC improved to 39-6 all-time in season openers.
