Competing in the second day of the Janis Hope Dowd Invitational on Friday in Chapel Hill, UNC set a new school record in the 200-meter relay event.
The team of Tyler Hill, Valdas Abaliksta, Boyd Poelke and Jack Messenger shattered the record for both the school and Koury Natatorium with a time of 1:24.26.
That not only was a new UNC record, but it was also just .16 seconds short of an NCAA “A” qualifying cut time.
“It ignites the team,” Tar Heel head coach Mark Gangloff said afterwards. “I think that showed as the subsequent events came after that the rest of the team responded when they saw the record come up.”
Abaliksta also took first place in the 100-meter breaststroke, while five other Tar Heel individuals or teams placed among the top three in Friday’s events.
