UNC will be well-represented at the annual Phillips 66 National Swimming Championships this week. Eleven swimmers from the men’s and women’s teams will compete at the William Woollett, Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine, CA. The championships begin Tuesday and run through Saturday.

“I’m very excited about this trip out to California,” said head coach Mark Gangloff. “Our athletes that are headed to Nationals did a great job preparing themselves this summer and I think we will swim extremely well.”

Six men and five women will compete for Carolina. Rising senior Sophie Lindner will compete in four events, the most of any Tar Heel at the competition. Lindner will swim in the 200 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 200 meter backstroke and 100 meter butterfly.

After two Tar Heels reached the swimming and diving competitions at the Olympics in Tokyo last summer, Gangloff is hopeful this week’s competition will prepare his swimmers for the next iteration of the Games.

“Looking at the Paris 2024 Olympics, our program will continue to put an emphasis on swimming in the best long course competitions that we can,” he said. “This national championship will include most of the top domestic athletes but will also include many international athletes from all over the world.”
