Two members of the UNC baseball team were selected on the first day of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft.

Michael Busch was selected with the 31st overall pick in the first round of the draft Monday night by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Minnesota native is one of the key cogs in the Tar Heels lineup that rolled through the ACC Tournament – where Busch won MVP honors – and the NCAA Regional play in Chapel Hill.

Busch has put together a junior year where he is batting .290 with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs.

He is the 23rd UNC player to be taken in the first round or supplemental round of the draft and is the 15th in the 21 seasons Mike Fox has been the UNC baseball coach.

Busch was considered one of the most polished hitting prospects in this year’s draft.

Junior pitcher Tyler Baum was also selected on the first day of the draft, going in the second round at number 66 overall to the Oakland Athletics.

Baum took over as the Friday night starter for UNC – when a team’s top pitcher takes the mound – after Luca Dalatri underwent surgery that ended his 2019 season.

Busch, Baum and the rest of the Tar Heels are getting prepared to play the Auburn Tigers in the NCAA Super Regional play in Chapel Hill for a chance to advance to the College World Series. Other Carolina players could hear their names called as the draft continues with rounds 3-10 on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m.
