UNC football’s team chaplain Mitch Mason is currently battling problems with his nervous system.

Longtime UNC football writer Lee Pace revealed the news on Twitter Friday, asking the Carolina community to keep Mason in their thoughts as he works through these issues.

Hired in 2013 by former head coach Larry Fedora to serve as the football program’s first ever chaplain, Mason has been responsible for promoting the spiritual and character development of players, a job similar to what he did for the Clemson football team from 2010-12.

He has also provided spiritual counseling and one-on-one services, while helping connect players, coaches and parents. In addition, Mason makes time to do charity work supporting underprivileged youth and visit children’s hospitals.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes connected Mason and Fedora, allowing the two to come up with the new role for the team.

Since then, many around the program have deemed Mason “invaluable” to the team for his work according to a 2016 story published by KeepingitHeel.com.

The nervous system, which includes the brain, is responsible for sensory, integration and motor skills.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for those who want to learn more about Mason’s recovery and to donate.
