A vote of the league’s seven head coaches resulted in the UNC field hockey team being picked to repeat as ACC champions this season, fresh off a perfect 23-0 campaign last year that resulted in the program’s seventh NCAA championship.
The Tar Heels received six first place votes (48 total points), while Duke got the only other one available. The Blue Devils (43 points) were selected to finish second in the conference, with Virginia (39), Louisville (25), Syracuse (18), Boston College (17) and Wake Forest (16) making up the rest of the poll.
In addition, a pair of UNC players–senior Yentl Leemans and sophomore Erin Matson–were both named to the Preseason All-ACC Team. Only Duke, with three, had more players chosen to that roster.
The Tar Heels will begin their regular season on Aug. 30 when they head to Ann Arbor for a game at Michigan as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
