Despite dropping its season opener to Michigan last weekend, the top-ranked UNC field hockey team has responded about as well as it possibly could.

The Tar Heels pulled out their third consecutive win on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Penn, which was also the team’s third straight win on the road.

Freshman Meredith Sholder tipped in a pass from teammate Marissa Creatore in the 19th minute to open up scoring for UNC. Then, just 21 seconds later, the Tar Heels added another tally when Creatore’s shot from the top of the arc beat Penn goalie Liz Mata.

UNC (3-1) made it 3-0 before halftime when Megan Duvernois gathered her own rebound and drove it home in the 32nd minute.

In the second half, Penn (0-2) outshot the Tar Heels by a margin of 4-3–and scored its only goal of the game in the 56th minute on a penalty corner from Rachel Huang.

Still, though, the damage was already done. UNC held tight the rest of the way en route to another solid victory.

“I liked our intensity in the first half,” Tar Heel head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “We moved the ball well at times. We’re still growing as a team.

“We didn’t handle certain situations well, but this team is really trying hard,” she added. “We didn’t play a full game today, but I love their energy and excitement.”
