Make it four straight victories to begin the 2018 season for the second-ranked UNC field hockey team, which used three goals from Catherine Hayden–and two more from Ashley Hoffman–on Sunday to score an 8-0 blowout victory in Philadelphia over the Penn Quakers.
The eight goals scored by the Tar Heels (4-0) matched their total from their first three games combined, as they also racked up 22 shots in the game compared to just three for their opponents.
Hoffman scored just four minutes into the game to give UNC the lead, before adding her second goal in the 20th minute to make it 2-0.
From there, the floodgates were opened for good–as Hayden scored three of the Tar Heels’ next four goals over the next 30 minutes.
Marissa Creatore, Hannah Griggs and Feline Guenther also scored for head coach Karen Shelton’s team, which had opened the year with three straight wins over teams ranked in the top 20.
Penn marked the first unranked team UNC had played this season.
“I was very pleased to see us get an early lead and then continue with the habits we’ve been training,” Shelton said afterwards. “When we were able to open up the bench, the level of play did not diminish and that was great to see. It speaks to our depth and the fact that we’re training the right things, and that everyone on the team is working hard.”
