Fans who like scoring were treated to plenty of it Tuesday night in Durham, as the seventh-ranked UNC field hockey team put on an absolute clinic in its 10-0 shutout victory over the Davidson Wildcats.

Sophomore Catherine Hayden notched her first career hat trick for the Tar Heels, who won their third straight game at their temporary home away from home–Duke’s Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.

Hayden’s phenomenal performance was supplemented by two goals from Ashley Hoffman, while five other UNC players each added a goal themselves.

The list of other goal scorers includes: Marissa Creatore, Malin Evert, Meredith Sholder, Leila Evans and Courtnie Williamson.

In total, the Tar Heels (7-2) racked up a whopping 33 shots in the game, while Davidson (0-7) failed to record even just one–getting shutout in every possible way.

UNC ended up getting 22 of its 24 players some playing time, with the game’s outcome never once in doubt.

“I think we’re getting better,” head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “This group has been a joy to work with – they’re focused and motivated and trying to get better.  All of us are working toward the same thing, and it’s fun to see them make these steps. That’s what we’re doing – each game, each week we’re making strides.”
