The UNC baseball team held on Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium for a 3-2 victory over James Madison, completing the three-game series sweep.

Despite getting just three hits in the game, the Tar Heels still managed to keep their new head coach, Scott Forbes, undefeated in his new role.

James Madison (0-3) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but UNC (3-0) quickly tied things back up in the second frame on a solo home run by Brett Centracchio.

The visitors responded by scoring again in the top of the third on an RBI fielder’s choice.

Not until the fifth inning did the Tar Heels have an answer, which came in the form of an RBI triple from Angel Zarate–who then scored on a wild pitch to put UNC ahead for good.

The Tar Heels held James Madison scoreless over the final six innings, including a critical bases-loaded, full-count strikeout from reliever Shawn Rapp that ended the top half of the seventh.

Max Alba threw five solid innings as the starting pitcher for the Tar Heels, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out six hitters.

This marks the second consecutive season that UNC has opened the year with a weekend series sweep, completing the feat in 2020 against Middle Tennessee State.
