Despite a solid outing from left-handed starting pitcher Will Sandy on Friday night at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, the UNC baseball team was on the wrong end of a 4-1 score in its first game of the Cambria College Classic against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Sandy struck out seven hitters through five innings and did not allow Minnesota to get a hit in either the second, third or fourth innings.

The Golden Gophers (5-4) did get three hits off Sandy in the first inning, however, to take a 1-0 lead and then were able to plate two more runs in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and hold onto the lead for the rest of the game.

UNC (7-3) got on the board in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly from Aaron Sabato, but managed to only record five hits throughout the entirety of the game.

“I thought Will Sandy was sensational tonight, we just could not give him any support,” head coach Mike Fox said afterwards. “We have to play better defense behind him. He was really, really good tonight and I thought he gave us a really good chance to win.”
