The UNC baseball team completed a huge series sweep over No. 8 Louisville on Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium, winning by a score of 10-5–a victory which also clinched the Tar Heels a spot in the upcoming ACC Tournament.
For Louisville (26-18), this represents just the second time the program has been swept in an ACC series since joining the league prior to the 2015 season. UNC also held the Cardinals to just six runs over the three-game series, matching the lowest total Louisville has ever scored in an ACC series.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Sunday after scoring three runs in both the first and second innings.
Dallas Tessar walked with the bases loaded to bring in the first run, which was followed by an RBI fielder’s choice by Mac Horvath and a sacrifice fly by Danny Serretti.
In the second inning, Horvath and Justice Thompson each added RBI singles for UNC. Colby Wilkerson then came home to score on a wild pitch.
Louisville tacked on runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, before the Tar Heels got back on the scoreboard in the sixth with an RBI single from Angel Zarate.
Two more runs by the Cardinals in the seventh pulled them within three on the scoreboard, but UNC again answered the bell with three runs in the eighth.
The Tar Heels then sealed the deal after Louisville got one across in the ninth, completing their most impressive series of the season to date.
A total of seven different UNC players drove in at least one run. Thompson and Brett Centracchio each had two RBIs to lead the way, with Centracchio hitting two doubles in the game as well.
