Looking for an impressive three-game sweep over No. 2 Virginia on Sunday at Boshamer Stadium, the UNC baseball team came up just short in a 3-2 loss.

Max Alba started on the mound for UNC (6-1, 2-1 ACC) and allowed Virginia to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single. The Cavaliers then connected on a two-run homer in the fifth to triple their lead.

UNC finally got on the board in the seventh inning when Brett Centracchio drove home Justice Thompson. Later that same inning, Jake Holtzapple’s sacrifice fly pulled the Tar Heels within one run.

The Tar Heels were unable to plate the tying run, however, allowing Virginia to avoid the sweep and hand UNC’s Scott Forbes his first career loss as a head coach.

“I’m glad we came out on top for two of three,” Forbes said afterwards. “I’m telling the guys, those are the type of series you have to win to make it to Omaha, against a team like Virginia.
