UNC senior Taylor Moreno was named the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association National Goalkeeper of the Year on Thursday, after a fantastic season in which she helped guide the Tar Heels to the top scoring defense in the country.

Individually, Moreno was second nationally in both goals against average (6.65) and save percentage (.549). She was named a finalist for both the Tewaaraton Award and the Honda Sport Award, which recognize the top player in the country regardless of position.

The 2021 ACC Defender of the Year becomes the fourth Tar Heel to win a National Goalkeeper of the Year award, joining Logan Ripley (2009), Caylee Waters (2015, 2016 co-winner) and Megan Ward (2016 co-winner).

Her 48 career wins rank second in UNC history and she has already announced she will use her extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to return for 2022 and add to that mark.

The Tar Heels carried a 20-0 record and a 27-game winning streak — the best in program history — into this year’s NCAA Tournament semifinals before falling to eventual national champion Boston College.

Others to be named the National Player of the Year at their positions by the IWCLA include: Charlotte North (attacker, Boston College), Ally Kennedy (midfielder, Stony Brook) and Lizzie Colson (defender, Maryland).
