The ninth-ranked UNC men’s lacrosse team got its regular season off to a fast start Saturday afternoon at Kenan Stadium, using an offensive explosion to defeat the Lafayette Leopards by a score of 17-10.

Timmy Kelly and Tanner Cook led the way the offensive charge with a pair of hat tricks, while ten different players scored for the Tar Heels–including three more who tallied at least two goals.

Among those that scored at least twice is a group including: Chris Cloutier, Brian Cannon and William Perry.

Perry, Kelly and Cook helped UNC take a 3-0 lead in the first nine minutes of the afternoon, with Lafayette never coming closer than two goals down the rest of the way.

For Cloutier, it was his 21st consecutive game scoring a goal–tying Jimmy Bitter for the seventh-longest streak in school history.

Lafayette actually out-shot the Tar Heels 46-38–and earned a 19-12 advantage in the face-off circle–but the UNC defense forced the Leopards into 24 turnovers to help offset the difference.

The Tar Heels will remain in Chapel Hill next weekend when it hosts the Furman Paladins. That game is set to begin at noon.
