A lone goal from Malin Evert was enough to give the fifth-seeded UNC field hockey team a 1-0 victory on Sunday over the No. 3 seed Louisville Cardinals in Louisville–delivering an ACC Tournament Championship to Chapel Hill.
Evert’s goal came midway through the first half off a penalty corner attempt, and proved to be all the Tar Heels (16-4) would need to avenge one of their four losses.
After beating UNC 3-2 earlier in the year, Louisville was held to just four shots in this game by a motivated Tar Heel defense.
Defender Ashley Hoffman was named the Tournament MVP for her efforts, which also included a shut out over top-seeded Virginia on Friday.
Evert, goalkeeper Amanda Hendry and midfielder Eva Van’t Hoog were also named to the All-Tournament Team alongside Hoffman.
The win also represents the Tar Heels’ second ACC Tournament championship in the last three years.
