Down 17 points at halftime in Thursday’s 73-66 loss at No. 3 Louisville, the UNC women’s basketball team nearly pulled off a stunning comeback on the road against one of the nation’s top teams.
Janelle Bailey and Stephanie Watts each scored 16 points on the night, as the Tar Heels (9-6, 0-1 ACC) clawed all the way back to within two points in the fourth quarter before Louisville (13-0, 1-0 ACC) was ultimately able to eke out the victory and stay unbeaten on the season.
It was also the ACC opener for both teams.
In addition to the performances from Bailey and Watts, senior guard Paris Kea added all 13 of her points in the second half for UNC–which trailed by as many as 19 points in the game.
The Tar Heels shot just 23 percent from the field in the first half and finished with a 33 percent mark for the game, while getting out-rebounded 45-30 as well.
