Traveling south to face the No. 25 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Wednesday evening, the fourth-ranked UNC baseball team saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end–as the Tar Heels were on the wrong end of a 5-2 score.

Seth Lancaster set the tone for the Chanticleers (33-16) with a two-run homer off UNC starter Taylor Sugg in the bottom of the first inning, giving Coastal Carolina a lead it would not relinquish.

From there, Chanticleer left fielder Lee Sponseller added an RBI double in the third inning and an RBI single in the fifth to bring the lead up to 4-0.

UNC (33-14) got its only scoring of the evening in the top half of the sixth when Ike Freeman blasted a two-run homer of his own.

Kieton Rivers helped Coastal Carolina respond with a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth, burying the Tar Heels in a three-run hole that they would ultimately be unable to dig out of over their final three outs.

The Tar Heels will now turn their attention to a critical three-game series in Durham this weekend against No. 13 Duke. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m. at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
