Despite a spirited upset bid from High Point on Tuesday afternoon at Dorrance Field, the UNC men’s lacrosse team held on for a 17-15 victory.

Senior attacker Chris Gray–the two-time reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week–was sensational once again for the Tar Heels, scoring three goals and dishing out four assists for his third straight seven-point game.

In addition to Gray’s excellence, UNC (3-0) also received three goals apiece from Tanner Cook, William Perry and Jacob Kelly. The win marks the team’s 10th in a row in a streak dating back to last season.

High Point opened the action on Tuesday by taking a 4-1 lead in the first quarter, but UNC would score 10 of the next 13 goals to take an 11-7 lead into halftime.

The Tar Heels scored the first four goals of the second half to take a commanding eight-goal lead. High Point refused to quit, however, and reeled off each of the next six scores to pull within two.

In the fourth quarter, UNC got goals from Alex Trippi and Perry in the first half of the period before High Point again pulled within two in the final minutes. Time then ran out on the Panthers, who were aiming to hand UNC its first loss since 2019.

High Point (1-1) was led by attacker Asher Nolting, who racked up four goals and five assists.

This was the first of two scheduled meetings between the two schools, with the Tar Heels set to host High Point again on Feb. 27.
