Looking to match the ITA National Indoor Title won by the school’s women’s tennis program last weekend, the third-ranked UNC men’s team started off their tournament run on the right foot Friday afternoon in Seattle–putting together a clean 4-0 sweep over the No. 22 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The win moves the Tar Heels into the quarterfinals of the event, and improves the team’s record this season to 8-0.
After the teams split the first two doubles sets, UNC needed a close 7-5 victory from the team of freshman Benjamin Sigouin and junior Anu Kodali to take the opening point.
Singles competition, however, was another story completely.
Sigouin (6-1, 6-2), William Blumberg (7-5, 6-0), and Simon Soendergaard (6-4, 6-1) each picked up wins in straight sets for the Tar Heels–clinching the opening-round win with ease.
For Notre Dame (7-1), it was the first loss of its 2018 campaign.
Up Next:
The Tar Heels will face No. 6 Texas A&M on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. for a spot in the tournament semifinals.
