Seeking the program’s second ever title at the National Indoor Championship finals on Monday, the No. 4 seed UNC men’s tennis team came up short in a 4-1 loss to No. 2 seed USC–representing the first loss of the season for head coach Sam Paul’s Tar Heels.
For the first time in their last 24 matches dating back to last season, the Tar Heels started the match by losing the doubles point.
UNC’s only point in the match came when William Blumberg won the first set 6-0 against Brandon Holt, before Holt then retired from the match.
The Trojans got singles wins from Daniel Cukierman (6-2, 6-1), Mor Bulis (6-3, 6-1) and Stefan Dostanic (6-1, 6-4) in straight sets to seal the victory.
With the loss, UNC falls to 10-1 on the season.

A two-week break awaits the Tar Heels now, as they return to action with their ACC opener against Virginia Tech at home on March 1.
