UNC sophomore John Nelson announced this past weekend that he has signed a Generation Adidas contract with Major League Soccer, making him eligible for the upcoming 2019 MLS SuperDraft.

Generation Adidas is a program which allows college underclassmen and select youth U.S. National Team players to sign MLS contracts and become eligible for the draft–with the exception that these players do not count against an MLS team’s salary budget.

Each year since 2003, the No. 1 overall pick of the MLS SuperDraft has come from the Generation Adidas program.

This past season, Nelson was a Second Team All-ACC selection at UNC, a year after being an All-ACC Freshman selection in his debut campaign.

Over his two years in Chapel Hill, Nelson started all 41 games he played in and helped the Tar Heels become one of the best defensive teams in the nation.

The former U.S. Under-17 World Cup player was part of UNC teams that won back-to-back ACC Coastal Division titles and made an appearance in the 2017 NCAA College Cup.
