UNC head coach Roy Williams announced Wednesday that former point guard Kendall Marshall–who joined the staff last season without a set role–will be the team’s Director of Recruiting.

The position is one that Williams has never had before on his staff, and he told reporters at the team’s media day that Marshall’s role has the potential to change on the go.

“What we are trying to do is be aware of social media and things that we can use in recruiting and be aware of putting out more things for prospects,” Williams said. “The real director of recruiting [are assistant coaches) Steve Robinson, Hubert Davis, and Brad Frederick, because they are guys that are out on the road.

“It is an evolving position,” the coach continued. “He is going to be aware of what’s being used by us in social media to send our story out to recruits. He is going to be involved in finding tape [on recruits]. It is an evolving position, it is never been a position I have had.”

Marshall has been back in Chapel Hill for parts of the last two years while finishing up his degree. He left UNC following his sophomore season to enter the NBA Draft, where he was selected 13th overall by the Phoenix Suns.

He was a Third Team All-American at UNC as a sophomore in 2012, while setting the ACC single season assist record with 351 across the 36 games he played in that year.

After spending parts of four seasons with the Suns, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Philadelphia 76ers–plus stints with three different G-League teams–Marshall retired from playing professional basketball in November of 2017.
