Former UNC forward Garrison Brooks shared plans to transfer to Mississippi State to complete his final year of NCAA eligibility next season.

Brooks, who has an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, announced the decision on Instagram Thursday. He will join the team where his father, George Brooks, is an assistant coach.

Brooks averaged 10.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game during his four seasons at UNC and is the 37th player in school history to score more than 1,000 points and grab at least 700 rebounds.

As a junior in 2019-20, he had his best season with the Tar Heels — averaging 16.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. The performance led to Brooks being named the ACC’s 2020-2021 Preseason Player of the Year.

Brooks’ departure signaled another change for the Carolina frontcourt for next season, as many other forwards have transferred or turned to the NBA this offseason. Talented freshman Day’Ron Sharpe announced he hired an agent to go to the NBA, while freshman Walker Kessler, redshirt junior Sterling Manley and senior Walker Miller all announced plans to enter the transfer portal. Sophomore forward Armando Bacot also announced his plans to test the NBA Draft process to receive feedback on his abilities and could potentially forgo his remaining eligibility.

Mississippi State went 18-15 this past season under head coach Ben Howland, finishing ninth in the Southeastern Conference.
