There has been a lot of excitement surrounding UNC football this season, and it appears some scammers took advantage of that before the Tar Heels hosted the top-ranked Clemson Tigers on Saturday in Kenan Stadium.

UNC Police are investigating 12 incidents involving 14 victims claiming to have been sold fraudulent tickets to the sold-out contest, officials confirmed in an email.

One arrest has been made in connection to one of the transactions, but investigations into the other instances are ongoing. UNC Police arrested 52-year-old Codell Milton Daniels and charged him with one count of obtaining property by false pretense, according to an arrest report.

Police said no other incidents of counterfeit tickets being sold have been reported this season prior to the spike on Saturday.

The game against Clemson was the third-straight sellout in Kenan Stadium this season, representing all of the home football games to this point. The game against Duke on October 26 is also a sellout, according to the university.

This is the first instance in recent memory of Carolina football games being the target of fake ticket scammers. Individuals have been arrested each year dating back to at least 2017 for selling fake tickets to UNC – Duke basketball games.

To avoid falling victim to counterfeit tickets, UNC athletics officials say the only way to ensure you are receiving authentic tickets is by purchasing them through the athletics office or on StubHub.
