Midfielder Justin Anderson scored 31 seconds into the first overtime period on Saturday afternoon at Kenan Stadium, to give the ninth-ranked UNC men’s lacrosse team a 15-14 victory over the upset-minded Furman Paladins.

Anderson had three assists already to that point, but his game-winner was his first, and only, goal of the afternoon.

The bulk of UNC’s offense came from senior attacker Chris Cloutier and midfielder Tanner Cook–who each had five goals apiece.

It was a back-and-forth affair in every way imaginable, as Furman built a 4-1 lead in the first quarter before UNC rallied to take a 9-5 lead at halftime.

From there, Furman exploded to score nine of the first 13 goals in the second half–good enough to hand them a 14-13 lead as time ticked away.

Cloutier then sent the game into overtime with a clutch goal that came with just a minute and 16 seconds left on the clock.

Not much longer after that, Anderson’s shot found the back of the net in the extra period–ensuring the Tar Heels would escape with the victory.

UNC will try to move to 3-0 on the year when it faces Lehigh next Saturday in Chapel Hill. That game is set to start at noon.
