The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association revealed its annual All-American teams on Tuesday, with a total of five Tar Heels among the First Team selections.
Attackers Jamie Ortega and Katie Hoeg joined midfielder Ally Mastroianni, defender Emma Trenchard and goalie Taylor Moreno in earning the honor, as UNC had players chosen at each position on the field.
The Tar Heels’ five First Team choices led all schools nation wide. All five players were also recently named First Team All-Americans by both USA Lacrosse and Inside Lacrosse magazines.
Ortega led UNC in scoring this season with 110 points (82 goals, 28 assists), while Hoeg — the program’s all-time leading scorer — was just behind with 109 points (38 goals, 71 assists) of her own. Ortega ranks second to Hoeg on the program’s all-time scoring list and her 265 career goals are first all-time at UNC and ninth in NCAA history.
Both attackers are four-time All-Americans, with Ortega using her extra year of eligibility next season to potentially become the first five-time All-American in school history.
Mastroianni had 31 goals and four assists from her midfield position in 2021 and led the team with 112 draw control victories.
Trenchard and Moreno, meanwhile, are three-time All-American selections who combined to lead a UNC defense which ranked first nationally with just 6.57 goals allowed per game.
Moreno was also a finalist alongside Ortega for this year’s Tewaaraton Award and was also recently named a finalist for this year’s Honda Sport Award in women’s lacrosse.
Her and Trenchard will join Ortega next season in using their extra year of eligibility to compete as fifth-year seniors.
The Tar Heels went 20-1 this season and had a perfect record until an upset loss to Boston College in the NCAA Tournament semifinals. That loss ended what had been a program-record 27-game winning streak, including a 7-0 mark during the shortened 2020 campaign.
