As the regular season gets underway this weekend for the second-ranked UNC field hockey team, head coach Karen Shelton announced Friday she has made a couple of new additions to her staff.
Former UNC goalie Jackie Briggs–who graduated in 2010–will join as a volunteer assistant coach. In addition, Gab Major–the only senior from last season’s team–is coming on as a student assistant as she finishes up her degree at the school.
Briggs served in a similar role during the 2012 season, while it’s the first coaching experience of any kind for Major.
“We’re thrilled to add Jackie and Gab to our staff,” Shelton said. “They both have great field hockey knowledge and bring different perspectives to the staff, Jackie as someone who has been playing internationally for almost a decade and Gab as someone who knows our whole team so well. They’ve been valuable during preseason and I know that will be the case as games get started.”
The Tar Heels officially open their regular season on Saturday against No. 5 Michigan as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
