According to an announcement from Carolina Athletics, fans of Tar Heel football are now officially welcome to start reserving their spot in Kenan Stadium for the 2020 season — or, at least, a spot for their custom cardboard cutout.
With three levels available ranging from the $50 base model to a $150 limited-edition representation signed by Coach Brown himself, the “Kenan Cutouts” will be placed in designated areas throughout Kenan Stadium. The announcement states that “exact seat requests cannot be accommodated at this time,” but it’s unlikely that any cardboard cutouts voice concerns or protest their eventual placement.
The opportunity comes after Carolina Athletics announced its fall sports programs would not host fans for home games through at least the end of September. Earlier in the year, UNC said Kenan Stadium will operate with limited seating capacity when fans are allowed and season tickets will not be sold for the year.
The changes are due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
As Kenan Stadium’s seating is outdoors and the cutouts will be attending each and every game played without fail, Carolina Athletics also makes no guarantees as to “the condition of your cutout after exposure to weather and outdoor elements.”
Of course, there is ongoing uncertainly regarding the 2020 Tar Heel football season due to COVID-19 concern, but one thing is for sure in the wording of the announcement: no refunds. Which, considering that all proceeds from purchases of the cardboard fans that will populate the stands this season will go to support Carolina’s 28 varsity programs and over 800 student-athletes, that isn’t too much of a concern for any blue-blooded fan.
